Περίληψη
The purpose of the present dissertation was a systematic and thorough scrutiny of the post-war era of Aghion Oros and a synthesis of all the important events which marked this period from a historical perspective. Additionally, the writerΒ’s objective was to acquire a deeper understanding of those events and their interrelation so as to shed light on the beginning of the modern history of Aghion Oros.
In order to achieve the aforementioned goal, it would be necessary for all the constituent elements pertinent to the post-war era to be compiled in a unified whole, avoiding the common practice of trying a one-sided approach of the history of Aghion Oros as the latter appears in specialized studies, particularly concerning the period in question.
Within this framework, it was necessary to explore the archives of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, of the Ministry of Agriculture and of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of Great Britain.
As far as the content of this study is concerned, the year 1920 was set as the starting date of the period of Interwar for Aghion Oros, which is when the Treaty of Sevres was signed, which actually reversed the existing unstable climate concerning the regime and the international position of Aghion Oros. On the other hand, the period of Interwar ends in April of 1941 with the German invasion and occupation, which terminated a twenty-year course and marked the beginning of a series of unfavourable developments and a manifestation of a new constitutional crisis in Athos. The liberation of Aghion Oros (1912) from Greece brought to the surface all the problems which had hitherto plagued the Athonite Polity, the most important of which were related to the rivalry developed among the monastic communities of a differing national conscience, to the conflicts between high-ranking (Elite) and subordinate monks, and to the issues which were connected with the political and administrative regime of aghion Oros, which had not been established until 1920. Furthermore, the introduction of the new calendar and the need for the integration of refugees in Northern Greece, led to the emergence of additional problems such as the Zealot Movement and the Monastery Dependency Issue.
The Legislative and Constitutional entrenchment of the regime of Aghion Oros in 1926-27, allowed the Greek State to take initiative, aiming at the resolution of long-existing problems (the Monastery Dependence, the reactions of the foreigners, the Zealot Issue, the financial problems of the Monasteries, the need for modernization) and the establishment of its dominant position in Aghion Oros. This initiative bore gradually fruit.
Unfortunately, however, this course of stability and resurgence for Aghion Oros was violently interrupted by the German Invasion of Greece in 1941.
